Nest lock says it is unlocked in Google Home routines

Using Google Home Routines, you can create a bedtime routine to help relax and fall asleep. Google Assistant allows adding events using your voice instead of typing them. – You can also add a calendar event by using the Doodle service, which will send an email to the organizer and get back with more details on the meeting. Google can help you plan out your day by providing information on the weather so you know what to wear and what to expect when you leave in the morning. You can also check traffic reports as well as get transit updates, which can help you plan a better commute. You’ll find plenty of great options built right into the Google Assistant app, and you can even access your favorite games for free when you use Chrome.

That’s not all; you can also be reminded about your to-do list and appointments for the day. It can also turn on a TV and set its volume, lock a door, or arm a security system. There are no options for unlocking doors or disarming security systems.

How to set up Google Home Household Routines

A Routine can include information from Google Assistant, such as weather forecasts and recent news. Here, I’ll show you how to set up a Google Home Household Routine from scratch so you can get your smart home doing the hard work for you. Curious about how to activate the Routines feature on your Google Home speaker? There are plenty of ways this can come in handy, though it does have its limitations.

These are multi-action shortcuts that control one or more devices and / or trigger one or more actions to happen automatically based on another single action. To create routines in your home in the Google Home app, you first need to add a compatible smart device, such as a speaker, display or light. The key to creating Shortcuts is in the Google Home app, a few lines down from Routines. You can tap on one and edit it as you like or create a shortcut from scratch. For this walkthrough, we’re going to do the latter. Next, choose one of the six available routines.

Can't find a device in Routines starters and actions

Routines can be tailored by time as well, so if your doorbell rings after sunset, you can have the porch lights turn on to welcome your visitor. Below the checklist, notice the radio buttons that permit choosing the kind of audio you want to hear. Each possibility has a radio button to the left of it and a settings cog to the right. You can only choose one type of audio, although you can always change your preference later via the app.

Now, you can have Routines start when another smart device in your home does something — such as a light turning on, a door locking, or a TV turning off. You can also combine some starters and add conditions to others that will limit the Routine to only starting after a certain time or on a certain day or between two times. A compatible smart home thermostat is even more specific concerning a Google Assistant routine. By tapping the Adjust Thermostat setting, you can set the temperature you like best. That way, you don’t have to wake up to a cold house or notice it’s too warm when you get back from work. When you set up routines, you and members of your home can get help from Google Assistant with tasks throughout the day.

That means you can now wake up to specific music, the news or radio and turn on the lights at the same time every morning. Tap the radio button next to one of the options, then tap the settings cog to the right to adjust what media should play. The Google Home routine allows you to create chore lists and other day-to-day tasks with your voice.

This makes your Routine play music, read the news , play the radio, or play a podcast or audiobook . It can also play from a selection of Sleep Sounds, handy for a Good Night Routine. As part of Household Routines, Google includes a preset “Home” Routine and an “Away” Routine that you can customize. These use sensors and other location data to determine when everyone is away or when someone returns home and starts a Routine based on that. For more on Home and Away Routines, you can check out this Google article.

To use starters based on time, sunrise and sunset, and when someone arrives or leaves a home, you must set an address for your home. While these supposedly smart devices are improving all the time, they have a long way to go before most of us regard them as truly ‘smart’. Prone to obvious errors and some serious shortcomings, there is a long way to go yet before digital assistants become genuinely useful. This is just a framework you can use for setting up any routine. Remember that you can always customize it and choose all the actions you want Google Home to do. These Routines can be used for a number of things, and there's no limit to how many you can create.

In Actions, you need to tell Google Assistant what you want it to do. Your options are pretty wide and include just about anything Google Assistant can do if you're giving individual commands. Maybe you can choose to get information about your commute to the gym or play your gym playlist to get you started.

Select the Routine you want to create a shortcut for. Anyone in the home, including guests, can start most household Routines. Add as much as tasks you want to trigger at once.

Another note is that personal routines can not benefit from the new device triggers, so your only option, if you go down that route, is to create a household routine. If there’s a gear icon next to the action, it means there are additional options available for customization. Some will even let you customize whether to trigger other devices. To that end, the morning routine in this example offers the options to turn on a smart bulb and set a connected thermostat to a specific temperature.

You can set multiple shopping list routines that will let you add new items when needed. You can control all smart bulbs, which are supported by Assistant, using voice commands. You can say “Google Morning Google” and then trigger the routine by speaking “Good Morning” or using some of the voice commands below. Use it to read up on the news, check the weather, and more. You can also use it to listen to music on a specific streaming service or to plan out your day.
